USER SUPPORTED PROGRAMS
MATH SCHOOL is a piece of "user supported" software. What is
meant by that is, MATH SCHOOL is available to anyone who want
to use it at no cost. This method of distributing computer
software allows the user to try the program without having to
pay for the program in advance. It also allows the user to
freely share programs with other users without the fear of what
the owners of the program maight do.
If you find MATH SCHOOL of use you are asked to send a contribution
($15 is suggested) the its author:
Stilwell Software Products
16404 North 43rd Drive
Glendale, AZ 85306
By sending a contribution you will become a register owner of
MATH SCHOOL. This will enable us to send you information on
new versions of MATH SCHOOL as they become available as well
as other new programs Stilwell Software Products will be developing.
By contributing you will also be supporting a means of software
development that will give you quality software at a greatly
reduced price.
You may recieve a copy of MATH SCHOOL by one of three methods.
First, you can send a $15 contribution to the above address
and we will mail you a diskette which will contain the program
and the documentation.
The second way is for you to send a blank, formatted diskette
to the above address. You MUST include an addressed, postage
paid return mailer. You may then use the software and make
a contribution later if you wish. The third was is to ge a
copy of the program from a friend or your local IBM PC User's
Group. You can use the program and later make a contribution
if you wish.
Regardless of how you get the program, if you find MATH SCHOOL
useful, your contribution will be greatly appreciated.
You are always free to make copies of MATH SCHOOL and to share
it with other people. You may NOT sell MATH SCHOOL nor can
you include it with any product you are distributing. You may
not modify MATH SCHOOL in any way.
INTRODUCTION TO MATH SCHOOL
MATH SCHOOL will run on the IBM PC, IBM XT, IBM PORTABLE and
the IBMjr. Your system will need the following;
(1) 64K RAM
(2) Any version of the IBM DOS (the operating system)
(3) BASICA (the advance version of BASIC that comes with the
operating system)
(4) One single-sided disk drive (or double-sided drives if
you have them)
MATH SCHOOL is a fun way to drill arithmetic problems. The
program can be thought of as having two main areas. The first
area is the testing area. This area will allow you to be drilled
on 36 different types of arithmetic problems. There are five
types of tests for whole number and for each of the five test
there are three levels. There are seven types of test for frac-
tions. Each of the fraction test also have three levels. Each
session will give you different problems since the numbers are
randomly selected. You are able to select the difficulty level
of the problems you wish to be drilled on. You can also select
to be timed (for example, you may want to practice answering
100 addition problems in five minutes). Your results on the
test will be analyzed by the program and you will be informed
as to the digits that you missed the most often. The results
of the test will be compared to the last 10 scores. If the
present result is better than the last 10 scores, your new score
will be recorded.
The second major area of MATH SCHOOL is the tutor area. This
area gives you immediate feedback as to whether your response
is correct or not. If the response is incorrect you will be
shown the correct answer and given a chance to study that answer.
The tutor area also allows you to select from 36 types of test.
As with the testing area, each session with the tutor is different
since the problems are always randomly selected. You can select
from three levels of difficulty while in the tutor area. You
can select to work on one digit if you like. For example, if
you are having trouble in multiplication with your 9's (the
testing area will inform you as to the digit you miss the most),
you can select to work only on problems that have 9's in them.
MATH SCHOOL has been designed to be easy to use but still to
be a powerful learning tool. MATH SCHOOL is a computer program
which will drill you on arithmetic problems, but it is more
than that. It also points you to the areas you need to work
on, and will help you work on the numbers that you are the weakest
in. It is our hope at Stilwell Software Products that you will
find MATH SCHOOL very useful.
GETTING STARTED
FIRST!! The first thing you should do with any new software
is to make a backup copy of the original diskette. You will
probably want to store the original and use only the copy (the
"work diskette"). This will insure that you will have a good
copy of the program should anything ever happen to your work
diskette.
TO MAKE A COPY. Put the diskette with the MATH SCHOOL program
on it in drive A (the drive on your left). Put a blank formatted
diskette (if you do not know how to format a diskette check
your IBM DOS manual) in drive B. Type the words "COPY *.* B:"
(don't type the quotes). This will transfer all the files on
the diskette in drive A to the diskette in drive B. If you
have a system with double-sided drives go to the next paragraph.
If you have a system with single-sided drives you will have
to remove the file called MATH.DOC from the diskette in the
B drive. The reason for this is that you need to make more
room on the diskette. This really is no big deal since you
will still have a copy of the file on your original MATH SCHOOL
diskette. To remove that file type "ERASE B:MATH.DOC" (don't
type the quotes).
Now we will need to add the BASICA.COM file to the diskette
in drive B. This is needed since MATH SCHOOL is written in
BASIC. Remove the diskette that is in drive A. We are done
with that diskette and you should now store it in a safe place.
Insert into drive A a diskette that has the file BASICA.COM
on it. This file was on the DOS diskette that came with your
IBM computer.
After the diskette is in drive A type "COPY BASICA.COM B:" (don't
type the quotes). This will copy the advance BASIC file to
your work diskette. We are now ready to start!
To start MATH SCHOOL simple type "BASICA MATH" (don't type the
quotes). Once the program loads you will see the start-up screen.
When you are ready to continue, simple press any key.
The next screen explains that MATH SCHOOL will allow you to
work with either whole numbers or fractions. Type the letter
"W" if you want to work with whole numbers or type "F" if you
want to work with fractions.
Next you will be given the option to choose the area you want
to work in. As mentioned above, MATH SCHOOL can test your arithmetic
skills, or can tutor you. Another feature of MATH SCHOOL is
that you can view your past scores (the VIEW option). This
is useful to see how well you are doing in a certain type of
test. If you want to be tested you should type the letter "M"
for MATH TEST. If you want to be tutored you should type the
letter "T" for TUTOR. If you just want to view your scores
on the tests you should type the letter "V" for VIEW. If you
are finished want to quit then type the letter "E" for END.
After you have selected the area you want to work in you will
be asked as to the type of testing, or tutoring you want to
do. During any of the screens that are asking you for information
on the type of testing or tutoring you can return to the previous
screen by pressing the "F1" function key (this key is located
in the upper-left hand corner of the keyboard). This will allow
you to change your mind on the type of testing or tutoring that
you will be given.
